Why Colbert'€™s Joke Failed #NotYourSafeComedyRace | Racialicious - the intersection of race and pop culture

dovsherman:

Asian-Americans should not be the safe comedy race, the race you can make racist jokes about and expect it to be okay. There’s this false impression that Asian-Americans are somehow immune to racism, maybe assuming that it doesn’t really happen to us. And yet recent studies have shown that Asian-American students are the racial group who are most frequently targeted by school bullies, almost 20% more frequently than White, African-American, or Hispanic students. Attitudes like the one behind Colbert’s joke contribute to the bullying culture that thinks racism against Asian-Americans is socially acceptable.

this is legit btw
I mean, there were folkloric heroes like Robin Hood before the Scarlet Pimpernel, but they didn’t really do the secret identity — people might not have known Robin Hood’s real identity but he wasn’t out living a double life and his costume was just what he and his buds wore in the forest, whereas the Pimpernel was actually doing the exact same thing as Bruce Wayne (pampered aristocrat by day, avenging hero by night)
also I wanna point out that the Scarlet Pimpernel was actually the leader of a league of twenty people also living double lives — Baroness Orczy also invented the first superhero team

Also The Scarlet Pimpernel is goddamned amazing and if you’ve never read it you’re missing out.

hon-hon-baguette-eiffel-tower asked: Hey i don't want to be rude or ignorant but i agree with the nerd guy from your last post. hes talking about how comics were his escape from a world where no one wanted him. He could read a comic and have an adventure that he couldn't have in real life. I realize there's often a lot of sexualization in comic but that was always part of it, its not fair to the readers to change that huge part of it now. That's altering the escapes these kids had/have, and the whole comics universe in general

mindeclipse:

and it’s never occurred to you that maybe more than straight white men want that escape?!!?

Hey straight white dude, thanks for explaining why representation is so important to people! Now please expand your definition of who counts as people.
